The legacy you leave behind

Bali coughed hard trying to breathe in as much air as possible. He was sweating profusely with his tongue trying to lick every drop of his precious perspiration.  The dry arid Gujarat summer can break the back and sense of most, Bali being no exception.
He was hit twice, one on his shoulder and one just below the right knee roll. The hits had made him immobile from his hands and from his abdomen. This pain he could endure, but the dehydration and the scorching sun of the Gir desert was a different test of endurance altogether.
Alex was lying dead next to him. Bali had done all he could do to save him. The bullet had hit him on the chest and tore apart his heart and come out from his back. Bali had emptied his canteen of precious water inside Alex’s throat to keep him alive. He had mustered all his strength to shake the dying man to keep him conscious and make him live for for as long as possible. No human has ever influenced him the way Alex had. Alex was an Oxford University researcher who was in Gir forests to learn about famed Gir Lions. Bali was Alex’s Indian guide and in the last five months spent with Alex, he had begun to worship the Englishman. “Mr. Alex, please stay put, please fight for your life. Just a few more minutes and help would arrive”, He tried to console Alex and more importantly, himself. When he finally realized that Alex was not breathing anymore, he cried out loud. Not because he was now alone in the battle against those barbarians, but because how feebly such a magnificent life was lost. He looked over at Alex’s body, a powerful and athletic man, a young spirit who believed in the goodness of humanity. But now he was dead. Bali thought,”Alex should have minded his own business and gone back alive to Oxford and continue with his thesis”.
Bali could see the British army in its bright red costumes discussing amongst themselves what to do with the two bodies. He knew he only had a few minutes before they would be here and he would breathe his last but he vowed to fight, fight till the end. Bali repented not being assertive enough with Alex. Bali knew they could have never escaped from the imperial army’s camp carrying this entire load. But, he was helpless, he was weak. He was mesmerized by Alex’s vision to do something good; he was enchanted by Alex’s sense of invincibility. This mission was a suicide mission but they had done well. The mission was to destroy army’s ammunition and they had succeeded. They had sneaked into the military camp and had set the barbarian army’s entire arsenal on fire. Bali’s pain eased a little when he relived the moment when he poured kerosene over all those cartons and Alex lit those boxes of death. Now, lying on the hot burning sand and in acute pain, Bali felt content. He had betrayed his own motherland and his own countrymen for the meaningless silver coins those Britishers had thrown at him. He had watched his own childhood friends being brutally assaulted while he, Bali the British Subedaar didn’t even finch an eyelid. He had sold his soul for a few pieces of silver alienating his maa - baba, his village men and his friends for life. But today, all his misdeeds would be forgiven.
He had accomplished a major feat, a milestone so huge that it would define his country’s future and would play a vital role in helping his motherland fight for its independence. Bali was smiling coyly about his feat while he heard footsteps. The British army was getting closer and his mind got alert to the situation around him. He saw those rifles lying around Alex’s body. It clicked to him that Alex’s efforts shouldn’t go waste. There was lying dead a man who could clearly distinguish between rights and wrongs, someone who idealized the goodness of humanity, and someone who was fighting someone else’s battle in someone else’s country. Looking at those rifles, Bali realized that there were unfinished tasks. He along with Alex had destroyed the entire ammunition consignment and now the British Army would be helpless till the new consignment arrived from Great Britain. Bali and Alex had successfully accomplished their mission. On their way back from the camp; they saw a large stack of rifles. Both knew that if they could sneak a few of these rifles out to the rebels, they could easily change the face of this conflict. Despite knowing that it would be virtually impossible to sneak out undetected with such a big load, they took the risk. Of course, they were noticed but Alex refused to drop the guns. The heavy load slowed them massively and the soldiers could easily shoot them down. Bali knew he had to destroy these guns. It was mid 1800s and guns were expensive and difficult to obtain. Without ammunition and guns, British army would be severely handicapped and the villagers could launch a counter-attack and win back their villages and lands.
Bali’s mind was running fast. There was this sudden zeal and energy which was driving him. He felt possessed. Without wasting a moment, he took out his own revolver and started destroying the rifles by shooting the barrels. The British soldiers realized what he was up to and they hurried towards the scene. “I must hurry,” he told himself. “They are close.” Bali kept on shooting at the guns destroying several of them. The soldiers were taken aback by Bali’s fervor. They wanted to take him alive and question him. They shot him on his left leg but Bali didn’t stop. The captain of the troops took out his sword and amputated his hand. His right palm dropped on the ground, revolver still tightly gripped by the index finger. Blood oozed out of his body like water from the fountains of Vienna. Bali was beyond the point where he felt any pain. He knew his calling was here and he had justified his existence in the world - He had left behind a legacy which would be cherished by his family and village men for generations.
The captain stepped forward now with a rifle in his hand; he raised the barrel to Bali’s face. Bali laughed again, his laughter was shrill and wild. His mind went into a zombie state, and he saw his parents and his village in his vision waving at him with appreciation. He saw the farms ripe with wheat and barley produce. And he saw Alex, cigar on one hand, his fashionable British hat on the other and gave him a soldier’s salute.

Its been 3 Years!

When I woke up today, I got a knacking feeling that today is a special day.
Putting my thinking caps on, I wondered what’s so special about today. Isn’t today just another mundane Tuesday where I continue spreading the evils of consumerism by selling more useless stuff to Americans who probably don’t need it at the first place.
And then this realization hit me. It’s the June 26th. My first thought was – Gosh!!! Is it already 3 years?? Wow!! Three years since we started our journey towards the best days of our lives.
Rolling back 3 years, on 26th June 2009, a gang of wannabe MBAs embarked at the Beijing airport. They were a gang of over-enthusiastic, inquisitive and idealistic students who were in fantasy land. They didn't know that in the next 15 months, some would find everlasting love, some exciting lucrative careers and all of them would  find friends who would last a life time. Little did they knew that they were starting upon a journey which would forever change their lives.
The gang was Nikhil, Hitesh, Karan, Mohit, Asanka,Aakanksha and me. I wrote about each one of them on June 26th, 2010 when we completed a year so will not describe what Asanka or Mohit or Nikhil are all about. If you want to know more, click here - http://blog2glory.blogspot.com/2010/06/its-been-year.html however, I would recommend you to read on …
So what were we in Beijing for ?? To learn Mandarin prior to commence our Masters degree in Business Administration from University of Hong Kong and London Business School for the class of 2009-10.
Not sure how much Mandarin we learnt, but we definitely learnt all about the party scene in the city. I am confident that most of us faintly remember any Mandarin, however we definitely remember Papparazzi and Ganges!!
Beijing was all about hunting to find vegetarian food, partying, hunting to find more vegetarian food and testing our disastrous culinary skills. So, after a month long ‘Chinese cultural exploration’ in Beijing, we finally were on our way to Hong Kong to start the academic part of the MBA.
With fierce ambitions and sparkling dreams, we reached Hong Kong aspiring to be the next Finance Gurus and Business Tycoons. What happened next was a roller coaster ride – one you will experience only when you are out of your comfort zone in a remote country.
With one step inside the Hong Kong airport, we already knew that next few months are going to one cracking time. While Beijing was distant and unemotional, Hong Kong had its own charm. It was vibrant, lively and very cosmopolitan. We all were so looking forward to experience and drink into this vibrance
The opening to our MBA was at a swanky Marriot hotel and we got an indication that we will be treated well during this course. After inspirational speeches by the Dean and Head of Department, we were very tactfully given our course material and schedules. MBA was busy, but we did found time to follow our passions. Some went hiking through the fantastic trails around the island, some preferred sleeping off to de-stress the grueling hours and some liked to explore this never ending puzzle called Hong Kong. I belonged to the latter group and looked forward to every Sunday when I would experience Hong Kong at its fullest.  Not to forget that every Friday night was a night VERY well spent at LKF for memorable times with the gang!
The gurudwara, harbor near Wah Ming, Starbucks inside HKU, Bossini in Causeway Bay -  these were all routine places but held special emotional attachments to our lives.
The irony of a 14 month MBA is that you lose track when does it start and when does it end. Soon, we were packing our bags to start our next leg which was a 3 month course at London Business School. If our time at Hong Kong University was excellent, the English Pundits will have to create another 'far superior word to excellence' to define our experience in London. LBS is the top ranked B school in the world so we were sure that we will be challenged academically. What we didn’t know was that the school very seriously believed in the proverb that “All work and No play makes Jack a dull boy”. What could have been a bigger example than having a pub inside the campus and getting free drinks every Thursday!!! Not only did we thoroughly enjoy our experience at LBS, we made sure to tour across UK and Europe in those 3 months. Some went to Greece, some went to Paris and careless people like me who didn’t apply for the Schengen visa, had to compensate with visiting around UK which I did extensively.Once the London chapter was over, we did come back to Hong Kong briefly for one last MBA course to Shanghai before we could finally say … YEAH It’s over.
During the MBA, every night before a project or assignment submission when we would be severely time constrained and behind schedule, we would swear at our wretched decision to join this MBA. However the night when we were suppose to submit our final project, none of us wanted to finish this assignment. That night, it was not about grades or marks at all, It was all about wanting to live another night as students… as MBA students at HKU.
Once, the MBA was over, everyone took to the frustrating path of looking for jobs. Some were lucky to get jobs in Hong Kong while some had to globe trot to build their careers in Singapore, Mainland China or India. Nikhil left HK to look for opportunities in Mumbai. With a very heavy heart, we let him board his flight to India. He was first to go, followed by me and finally a few more.
On 30th November 2010, it was time for our graduation ceremony. Most of us made it here from around the world and it was absolutely amazing to meet the HKU MBA students of 2010 whom we had gradually learnt to call family.
That was  was November 2010… When I think about it in June of 2012, all this seems so fresh in my mind. In the last 18 months, so much has changed. Many of us got married including Hitesh, Mohit, Shuchi and Dipti while many of us are on our paths to realizing our professional dreams. Nikhil is turning into a hot shot Investment Banker in Mumbai while Hitesh is attaining ground breaking success as a trader. Asanka has found his solace in his role at HSBC while Aakanksha is achieving greater heights as a Financial Analyst at Intel. Mohit got married this year and is enjoying his extended honeymoon while Karan recently got engaged to Jessica whom he had met at our student boarding in London.
When I look back to our time as students in Beijing, Hong Kong and London, I realize that what we had back then, was something extra special. Something so rare and so special, that it comes to us once in a lifetime. Today, all of us are on our paths to family, success and glory but during this journey I hope that we don’t fade away from each other’s lives. Today, let’s live these memories and hope that there will be more new ones to cherish for a life time.

The Imaginary

Ravi was ecstatic as he read on his computer screen.
Why are you all smiling. What joy?”
Well, Arindam called me an inspirational writer in his article. Can you believe that?!” Ravi replied.
He did?! What ? Why? When?! Are you kidding me? I mean, come on, why the hell would he call you that?”
Ravi, a little annoyed by the skepticism, Well, for your information, He mentioned it in his article about the Imaginative Blogger Award and bestowed upon me the honor of being one!”
Imaginative !!!! hahaha! Hehehehehe !”
What’s so funny? Why are you laughing so hard? Have you gone insane” asked a visibly aggravated Ravi.
Hahaha… so — sorry.. gosh… I just ca – I can’t help it, hehehehe ! I can’t believe that of all people, you could fall for these stupid memes! Hahahaha!”
Look, it might be stupid… but rest assured that Arindam will definitely not give me such a prestigious award just for the sake of passing it on. You are aware of that! He definitely meant what he wrote about me!” Ravi was shaking with fury.
Lolz !! Yeah, I know that. But Still, don’t forget it’s just a stupid meme. Hahahaha !!
Look! I have been working furiously to make a mark in this discreet writing world. Now, here’s an author with a reputation, gives me a giving me some recognition to affirm that I’m doing something right, and instead of celebrating, you are demotivating me ?! Thanks for nothing !”
Wo buddy !! sorry mate, hehe… I just can’t help it. Okay, I’ll stop now hehe… so what does this award ask you to do now? I’m sure there is something you have to do, that’s how these memes work.”
Yes there is… there are, actually,” Ravi replied. First I have to thank Arindam for bestowing me the honor, which I did when I visited him blog. I have to mention seven things about me, and I have to bestow the same award to 15 other bloggers.”
Hmm… you already have the list of seven things to make a fool of yourself?”
Why would I make a fool of myself? They shouldn’t necessarily be ridiculous. Maybe something out of the ordinary, but not outright stupid,. One day you are going to eat your words Mate !!” chided Ravi.
So, what could be those seven extra-ordinary things about you?”
Well, uhmm … let’s see…” Ravi analyzed about himself , hmmm… to start with, I can be a professional bathroom singer. In fact yesterday, I spent two hours trying to perfect my version of summer of 69! Secondly, I hate Star trek. I mean, come on, who can hate Star trek. They are just absolutely awesome, right!! Finally, I can type with my eyes Closed! !!!
Aren’t all these awesome things about me!! How many have such extraordinary qualities ??
Those are not extraordinary! Those are regular stuffs! So many of us are bathroom singers, and there are millions who hate Star Trek, and I can type with my eyes closed! Come on man, get your creative juices flowing!”
Alrite, Alrite, how’s about this?” continued Ravi, I still fear the creaking sound of our staircase after all these years staying here. Reminds me of the movie Scream !!.”
Now that’s better man !! So tell me more. You got .. three more to go.”
I don’t really like my software programming job, and don’t understand why I took the god damn course!”
NORMAL! Come on shake my world with the last two”
You know Sharma Chai with his delicious samosas do me good ”
Whatever…. dull! Last chance”
At this very moment, I am actually nursing a broken heart.”
You don’t say! Really, tell me about it. Come on, come on.”
Oh, stop acting silly, as if you don’t know. Shall we proceed?” said Ravi
Okay, now you should pass the award to 15 other people. Are you up to it?”
Jeez, actually I am not at all,” quipped Ravi. I haven’t really been socializing much lately. I guess I know three so called versatile writers but I am not sure if they are ready for memes  now–VIshwa is busy completing his accounting degree. So Lame !! Ash is currently  backpacking across Africa, lost and grounded, and I m sure he doesn’t want to be back. Well, and Stacey… she hasn’t been writing lately, and I m not sure where does all the steam blow out from !!!
So, basically you don’t how to pass that award right now?”
Well, if they accept it, I will be more than glad. Otherwise, I really wouldn’t pass it, not at this time, at least. I hope I don’t disappoint Arindam,” said Ravi.
Oh don’t worry. It will take more than ignoring an award task to disappoint that dude… err I mean, Gentleman.”
Just then, Ravi’s brother, Sid walked out of his room, Bro, who were you talking to?” he asked.
Oh! No one, buddy!!  I was just… you know just… just talking to myself,” replied Ravi with a grin.

6 things to KEEP in mind before DATING a tech entrepreneur

A few days back I was talking to a friend of mine. He sounded all aghast and distraught. Though knowing better to mind my own business, curiosity got better of my judgment, and I asked him about the source of his despair. And his answer was the very obvious one- Trouble of the broken heart. Not surprised but acting surprised, I asked him the cause of this tragedy.

Apparently, his girlfriend thought that this techie dude was more in relationship with his smart phone and his macbook than her and dumped him last night. Being a entrepreneur running a promising startup developing biometric response systems, he obviously had his hands full and definitely didn’t need more life-based complications. However, being human, he had a heart, which was crushed mercilessly last night. And, now he found a better use for his computer – to listen to sentimental sad songs by Air Supply and Lobo. Looking at his sad plight but more dreading at the prospect of listening to more of Air Supply and Lobo, I decided that this world needed a check point for girls to decide whether they have it in them to date techie entrepreneurs. If not, they should let those miserable lost souls live in their own world developing great ideas and products and changing the world.

So here it is – a List of pointers you need to keep in mind before you fall/select your next techie entrepreneur beau ........
  • 1.       Most techie entrepreneurs would be bootstrapping for the first couple of years. Their ventures would be unprofitable and most probably, the guy would be a cash strapped. So, don’t expect him to buy you a diamond necklace for your birthday or take you out on lavish dinners at the best addresses in town very soon. Rather, get used to microwave food and second hand birthday gifts bought obviously on auction from ebay.
  • 2.       You shouldn’t be offended, if eventually you both schedule to get married, and he forgets to show up because he just had an eureka moment in his “world changing/path breaking” technology idea.
  • 3.        You need to be terrific at attention grabbing because your boyfriend’s attention is definitely more focused to his high end smart phone where he is twitting, updating his facebook status and at the same time videoconferencing with his investors. Also, you need to empathize if all this happens during a date.
  • 4.       90% of startups fail. This means, there is 9 out of 10 chance that your boyfriend might fail. So be prepared that your techie boy friend might fail in building the next facebook.com. So, don’t expect him to be the next Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. If lucky, he would be able to buy a house and car with the cash flow from his venture.
  • 5.       Moreover, always remember that success could be a doubled edged sword for you. If your beau makes it big, then there will bullock carts of attention. Suddenly, hot models will find your geeky, bony, freckled face boyfriend very attractive and sexy. There might be a possibility that these geeky boyfriends would want to upgrade to the latest “models”.
  • 6.       Nonetheless, never forget that your boyfriend is a human though he behaves like a zombie. He also has feelings and need to be loved and felt wanted (mostly only when their smartphone batteries are down). So you also gotta be patient, understanding and caring, and in return they might once in a while switch off their smart phones and give you attention.
If you are a single girl looking for love and live in the Silicon Valley or anywhere close to geeky zones like the backyard of MIT or RDU area, my suggestion or strict advice to you is, to take a printout of the above mentioned pointers and stick it on your mirror at home. You want to ensure that you read this every morning before you take the step into geekyland.
